Advice, Advocacy and Welfare Benefits Service for people in Shropshire

Four local free, independent, confidential and impartial registered charities delivering advice and advocacy have come together again to deliver Advice, Advocacy and Welfare Benefits Service for adults in Shropshire.

Citizens Advice Shropshire is proud to be leading this partnership funded by Shropshire Council, delivered in collaboration with A4U, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin and Taking Part.

Citizens Advice Shropshire has been delivering county wide information, general help and advice services in Shropshire for 80 years this year. During this time CAS has adapted and evolved to be a market leader in information and advice provision, supporting clients with various issues, such as welfare benefits, debt, relationships and family issues, employment, discrimination and more.

A4U is a Disability Advice Centre providing information, advice and advocacy to people with disabilities, their families and carers, as well as health and social care professionals. A4U provide specialist support for adults with autism.

Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin works with and for older people to improve the quality of later life within the borders of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

Taking Part provides a wide range of services including advice and advocacy to people with health and social care needs throughout Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.  In Shropshire we provide independent advocacy including statutory advocacy.

Jackie Jeffrey, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Shropshire, said ‘‘We have been delivering advice and advocacy service for adults in Shropshire for over 200 years between us and for the past five years in a formal partnership we have helped over 13,000 people. We are delighted that Shropshire Council is providing funding for these much needed services for people in Shropshire. Our vision is to deliver a person-centred, community-focused and flexible service, effectively delivered by an established network of information, advice and advocacy providers with a comprehensive track record in meeting the needs of diverse communities, ensuring client choice, promoting independence and achieving positive well-being outcomes.’’

Dean Carroll, Shropshire Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health & Climate Change, said “Shropshire Council is delighted to be able to continue our working relationship with all four of these local organisations. The work they do helps people to stand on their own two feet and to be able to deal with difficult situations in the knowledge that they have received high-quality advice and support. In addition, people are much more likely to be able to access the right support at the right time, regardless of their entry point, as a result of the close working relationship between this partnership of charities and the council.”

The new partnership is effective from 1 October 2019.
